FACILITIES
• Keep bathrooms open.
• Prioritize infrastructure and desperate school renovations in the Capital Improvements Plan (CIP) budget.
• Improve reporting systems for schools to report infrastructural damages.
• Require all new construction and renovation to be electric (not run on fossil fuels)
• Support ADA compliance through the implementation of accessible features in school infrastructure and technology.
• Build a plan to remove portables from every school by 2040 (adding additions to school buildings if necessary), recognizing that portables pose health and safety threats.
• Ensure reliable HVAC systems to reduce poorly-regulated and extreme temperatures in classrooms.
• Assist with MCPS’s transition to an all-electric school bus fleet and develop an MCPS bus-tracking app for students.
• Work with the County Council to establish a composting facility in Montgomery County and develop a plan for expanding composting programs to all 211 schools.
• Work with community stakeholders to develop an MCPS Climate Change Action Plan (CCAP) that will lay out the blueprint for reaching our school system’s sustainability goals outlined in Policy ECA, S(https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/eca.pdf)ustainability.(https://ww2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/policy/pdf/eca.pdf)
• Work with the MCPS Student Climate Action Council to lead a campaign to get all schools Green School Certified by 2035.
• Implement more environmental literacy education into the science curriculum to inform students, especially at a younger age, about the dangers of the climate crisis and what they can do to make a difference.
• Meet and work with the Division of Sustainability and Compliance to track and publicize all data relating to our school system’s sustainability efforts.
• Work with the County Council to explore the option of allowing students to ride the Metro for free.
• Expand the implementation of solar panels and the use of renewable energy sources.
